Shaylen Burnett- CAA Preseason POY
Former Southern Alamance standout and now senior guard Shaylen Burnett of Elon University women’s basketball has been selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Player of the Year, as voted on by the league’s head coaches. The defending CAA champion Phoenix has also been selected to finish second in the preseason poll. In addition to Shaylen’s Player of the Year honor, she has also been named a Preseason First Team All-CAA honoree for the second year in a row.
A three-time CAA Player of the Week throughout the 2016-17 season and a back-to-back First Team All-CAA honoree, Shaylen enters her final season with the Phoenix already with 1,143 points, which stands 122 behind a spot on Elon’s all-time list for most in a career. During her junior season, she became the 21st player in program history to surpass the 1,000-point mark in Elon’s road win against UNCW on Feb. 5. She also became the fifth player on that list to do it before reaching her fourth season of play. Burnett also stands to climb Elon’s all-time record book in career rebounds, sitting just 12 behind that list with 656 entering the 2017-18 campaign. She is already in Elon’s Top 10 for assists (seventh place with 356), assists per game (fourth place with 3.7), three-pointers made (10th place with 82), free throws made (fourth place with 341) and free throw attempts (fourth place with 466). Congratulations to Shaylen on her recognitions and we wish her and the Phoenix much success in the upcoming season.
